Outstanding ! This episode rates a 9 out of 10. Good script, good story and great acting.
The XO is starting to behave like a naval officer. Her dressing down of "RO" (on two occasions), was appropriate and well acted.
"RO, it wasn't a request." Good one XO.
RO plays very well in scenes with the XO. He's given very good lines and performs them flawlessly.
Some classic lines in this episode include:
"Hey Spider, how's the crabs were gave you on Bright Island?" Pure gold.
Similarly, when one of the sailors comments on the quality of RO's D-I-Y first aid, he snaps back: "I only had one arm."
The accidental video taping of the fisherman and suspected drug-lab boss was also a nice touch setting us up nicely for future episodes. Maybe we'll find out that Spider is in fact an undercover Federal Agent, Bright Island is a tropical meth lab and Dr Ursula Morrell is a Crime Queen?
The wardrobe department should also be given a big tick. When the boys
go on on the turps to celebrate Cheffo's engagement they are all
dressed authentically.
The
Chief Stoker, in particular, looks exactly like a Chief Stoker would look. Even the CO is dressed like a CO would dress ... badly. That's why the RAN gives naval officers such drop-dead gorgeous uniforms.
Now to the ever so tedious and e-mail generating knit-picking.
* This show is big on footage recycling. If I see another cut-away to a propellor in the water I'll scream. There were four, yes four, prop shots in this episode. Come on editor, you can do better than that.
How about some piston action in the engine room, or a close-up of the steely eyes of the navigator as she scans the horizon? In case you're wondering the opening storm scene was recycled from episode 3.
* The Nav is a silly little girl. If she was a Subby then maybe should could get away with her comments and over-exuberance. Girl scout in Navy overalls.
* How come there was no officer involvement in the decision to permit an illegal immigrant claiming to be a doctor, to patch up an Australian sailor using an instrument bag that had been flopping around in a grotty shipping container? Not an officer in sight.
* I don't now what the drill is, but would you really use a Steyr to give warning shots over the stern? 50 Cal yes, but they wouldn't hear a freakin Steyr.
*
The ships radar still hasn't had that software upgrade. Still stuck on 90 degrees at 16 knots. They'd be somewhere in South America by now.
